Discipline-Specific Internship – Emergency and Critical Care
Location: Vets Now Specialist Referrals, Glasgow

We are now inviting applications for our Emergency and Critical Care Discipline-Specific Internship (DSI) at Vets Now Specialist Referrals, Glasgow.
Role Overview
This 12-month internship provides a unique opportunity to work collaboratively with our ECC specialist team, gaining hands-on experience in intensive care and emergency referrals.
Interns will rotate through day, back, and night shifts, with dedicated time for study, research, and collaboration with other specialties to enhance ECC-related skills.
You will be involved in advanced patient care, supported by our experienced ICU nursing team and access to advanced equipment and therapies, including mechanical ventilation, high-flow nasal oxygen therapy, and therapeutic plasma exchange.
Glasgow has a well-established ECC residency programme, and DSI interns will be actively involved in organised teaching and specialist-led training. This internship will provide a strong foundation for candidates considering future residency opportunities within Vets Now or other referral hospitals.
Key Responsibilities
As an ECC DSI Intern, you will:
Participate in the planning, diagnosis, and treatment of Emergency and Critical Care cases.
Manage ICU patients and emergency referrals under the supervision of experienced ECC clinicians.
Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure comprehensive and holistic patient care.
Work closely with ECC specialists, residents, and senior nurses in a supportive and inclusive team environment.
Actively engage in seminars, journal clubs, and ad-hoc teaching sessions.
Contribute to clinical research projects alongside clinical mentors.
Maintain high clinical standards, accurate medical records, and ethical patient care.
Develop the ability to prioritise effectively and remain calm in challenging emergency situations.
Requirements
To be eligible, you must have:
A veterinary degree recognised by the RCVS.
Registration or eligibility for registration with the RCVS.
Prior completion of a small animal rotating internship or significant experience in Emergency and Critical Care.
Eligibility to work in the UK. Visa sponsorship may be available for suitable candidates and will need to be discussed.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
The ability to prioritise effectively, remain calm in challenging situations, and work collaboratively.
A genuine interest in developing a career in Emergency and Critical Care.
A proactive and professional approach, with a commitment to high standards of patient and client care.
Benefits
Salary: £35,000 per annum

About the ECC Service
Our Emergency and Critical Care service provides specialist-led care for a wide range of emergency and critically ill patients. The service works closely with the wider multidisciplinary referral team and is supported by an experienced ICU nursing team.
The Glasgow hospital provides access to advanced critical care facilities and therapies, including mechanical ventilation, high-flow nasal oxygen therapy, and therapeutic plasma exchange.
The internship offers exposure to a broad range of emergency and critical care cases across day, back, and night shifts, allowing interns to develop their clinical decision-making, patient management, and emergency skills within a supportive specialist-led environment.
